Cirrus goes carnation pink and lilac above a stand of Washingtonia palms, their shaggy trunks lit warm by the last of the sun while a spring-fed channel threads through the foreground, stone-lined and still enough to hold the whole sky upside down. Rain dimples the water's surface — a rare event here, and the detail that makes the frame. This is La Casa del Zorro in Borrego Springs, the 1937 desert resort tucked against the Anza-Borrego badlands in San Diego County's backcountry. The palette is the draw: salmon and violet sky against sun-warmed ochre trunks, deep green fronds, and the cool silver-blue of the reflecting channel. A study in contradiction — manicured water in an arid basin, hacienda comfort against the Colorado Desert.
